It originated in the 18th century when Cheung Chau <em>(then infiltrated by pirates)<\/em> was affected by a plague. Residents and local fishermen paraded the village disguised as deities to drive away evil spirits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The festival falls on the<\/strong> <strong>eighth day of the fourth month of the Lunar calendar<\/strong> and it usually coincides with Buddha\u2019s Birthday <em>(which means you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sassyhongkong.com\/public-holiday-hong-kong-annual-leave-travel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">make the most of the public holiday<\/a>!).\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Each year, the Bun Festival attracts thousands of goers who gather to witness the <strong>colourful parades<\/strong> coupled with traditional lion and dragon dance, and the <strong>&#8216;bun snatching competition&#8217;<\/strong>.
