While the closure of big-box clubs signals a shifting tide in nightlife, the success of HE.R 鶴 suggests Hong Kong’s appetite for partying hasn’t ceased. We sat down with DJ and founder Cocoa Zhou to discuss how she’s reimagining the rules for the local music scene.

When Trilogy announced its closure in March, the public immediately began speculating what nightlife doomsdayism to attribute the news to. Hong Kong’s impossible rent costs? The rise of ‘sober partying’ culture? Society’s ubiquitous lack of disposable income? Whatever the reason, ‘nightlife is dead’ remains the broader insinuation. Perhaps, but that hasn’t stopped organiser Cocoa Zhou from showing Hong Kongers a good time

Last month, Zhou’s inaugural party OPEN by HE.R 鶴 drew hundreds to Chater Road — on a Sunday, no less — to close out Hong Kong Art Week. DJs Tripolism, MĪMĪ x FY, Alex Nude, Ani Phoebe and Zhou herself entertained a packed crowd for seven straight hours of open-air dancing, drinking and mingling, culminating in an urban music festival environment rarely seen in Hong Kong.

A post shared by OPEN by HE.R (@open_by_he.r)

An established DJ and producer, Zhou launched the music and party concept HE.R 鶴 in May 2025 as a direct response to her own changing lifestyle. After becoming a mother in 2024, she found Hong Kong’s traditional late-night circuit — one where clubs “rarely get busy until 1:30 or 2am” — increasingly incompatible with her new reality.

After I became a mum, I realised the challenge of finding balance in life. It seemed impossible to be a good wife and mother while maintaining my career as a DJ.

Beyond irreconcilable schedules, a baby at home also kept Zhou from touring internationally, as she was accustomed to. Nevertheless, the DJ refused to compromise on her career and passion, and so began her own venture. Teaming up with fellow DJ Alex Nude, the duo pivoted to a model which allowed them to “curate the crowd, venue and music” they loved abroad, “right here in Hong Kong.”

The resulting concept transforms fine-dining institution Mott 32 into an electronic music haven on Saturday nights. By opening the doors at 11pm (as dinner service concludes) HE.R 鶴 allows guests to transition directly from mealtime to the dancefloor. This ‘dinner-to-party’ model not only caters to a crowd that values a slightly earlier start, but also bypasses the crippling constraints of Hong Kong real estate. That is, by utilising an existing space for a limited window, Zhou capitalises on the restaurant’s luxe atmosphere while avoiding the high-risk gamble (and cost) of opening a new, dedicated space.

A post shared by HE.R 鶴 (@he.r_asia)

Zhou’s decision to host OPEN by HE.R 鶴 on Chater Road was equally intentional. “I wanted to do something interesting; to choose a venue that hasn’t been used, unlike a typical event space,” she notes. After much discussion with friends and experts, HE.R pitched Chater Road to Hongkong Land, her eventual venue partner. “Even their team couldn’t believe we ended up pulling off an event of this scale in a public space,” Zhou shares.

The logistics were, Zhou admits, a nightmare. Expanding from working with a 400-capacity restaurant venue to a street party for thousands, she recalls sleepless nights and collaborations with “millions of contractors” to build a world-class stage in the middle of Central. Perhaps most brutal, the team couldn’t begin setting up until 3am the night before as earlier would infringe on the street’s public use.

“Whatever you do, going from step zero to one is always the hardest,” she says, reflecting on the challenge of selling tickets to an event no one had ever been to. The progression was a “big jump,” but her motivation was simple: thousands fly into the city for Art Basel, and the streets are flooded with scenesters looking to mingle, network and be seen. In other words, all eyes are on Hong Kong.

I wanted to do something loud that makes a statement, while the world is watching.

An ambitious goal, but one that the DJ unmistakably reached. Standing in the heart of Central, surrounded by the city’s most iconic buildings, one could feel an energy akin to pre-pandemic crowds. This is feedback Zhou received firsthand from her friends, international visitors and even the guest DJs. “They were blown away by Hong Kong, by how stunning the venue was. A part of that is how good a job our team did, but it’s also a testament to how beautiful this city is.”

A post shared by OPEN by HE.R (@open_by_he.r)

As for what’s next, Zhou isn’t content with one-off success. Plans are already in motion to turn OPEN by HE.R 鶴 into a biannual staple of the Hong Kong social calendar, with a potential return in the fall to coincide with the cooler weather. Beyond the city’s borders, the HE.R brand 鶴 is eyeing a global expansion, looking to international hubs where the ‘dinner-to-dancing’ appetite remains underserved.

Needless to say, netizens’ ‘nightlife is dead’ narrative appears to falter in the face of new, music-centred projects — particularly when they accommodate Hong Kongers’ busy, multi-faceted schedules. If we are to learn anything from Trilogy’s closure, then, perhaps it’s that the massive, multi-storey nightclub model was simple a product of a different era.

Today, it’s simply not enough to offer great views and great music. Rather, for a venture like this to be successful, it has to meet Hong Kongers’ altered expectations and experiences. This is exactly why Zhou’s concept has found success: it perfectly toes the line between offering prestige venue’s exclusivity and a community-focused project’s inclusivity. The feat not only suggests that a new era of nightlife is here, but that Hong Kong is ready for it.

As Fuggler opens its first flagship store in Hong Kong, CEO Mark Kingston explains why ugly-cute toys — and the escapism they offer — are exactly what the city needs.

With mismatched eyes, an unsettling grin and teeth that look like a dentist’s nightmare, Fuggler is a far cry from the traditional plush toys. Yet the British-born “funny ugly monster” plush toy brand has become one of the most talked-about collectibles in Hong Kong. You will spot them everywhere, dangling from handbags and lined up on office desks. Mark Kingston, CEO of Fuggler Corporation, who was in town for the opening of the Fuggler flagship store at Hysan Place, Causeway Bay, sat down with us to talk about how the cult brand has taken the world by storm.

Fuggler, ugly cute toy, popularity, hong kong, kidult movement

Fuggler Was Born From A Birthday Present

The Fuggler’s origin story is as wonderfully odd as the toys themselves. The brand was created in 2010 by a British woman named Louise McGetrick, who was stuck for a birthday gift idea for her husband, a devoted fan of Jaws. Her solution was to buy a lot of false teeth, eyes and buttons off eBay, stitch them into a plush toy, and present it to him as a one-of-a-kind gift. And that’s how the first Fuggler was born.

McGetrick began making more characters, eventually landing on the name “funny ugly monsters” — later condensed into Fuggler. Kingston and his team have since taken the concept global, injecting what he describes as “chaotic, mischief humour” into every design. “They’re ugly and cute, but it’s also that physical comedy,” he says. “When you look at them, it just puts a smile on your face. And then we can do anything with the different colours, patterns and fabrics to really bring out their personalities.”

Fuggler, ugly cute toy, popularity, hong kong, kidult movement

What’s In A Name? Everything!

Fuggler’s cult appeal is mainly due to its characters and, of course, their unusual names such as Sir Belch, Old Tooth and Yeti Betty. Each name feels like it was dreamed up in a school playground, and that is not entirely far from the truth. Kingston shares that naming sessions at Fuggler HQ are collaborative, freewheeling affairs involving the team and toy partner Zuru.

“We sit down, look at the various different designs and work out the character names that fit,” he says. “So if they’ve got a gap tooth, that’s why they’re Gaptooth McGoo. Sir Belch — well, Fugglers burp, belch, fart, so Sir Belch seemed quite appropriate.” He laughs. “We have really good fun just coming up with names. We band them about and take a couple of days to work out the names for each theme.”

It sounds simple, but it’s also a clever marketing strategy. In a crowded collectibles market, a memorable name transforms a plush toy into a character, and a character into something a buyer feels they need to collect, rather than simply possess.

Ugly Has Never Looked So Good

In Asia, Fuggler now occupies similar cultural territory to Labubu, widely grinning creature from PopMart, that has become an icon. Both sit in what Kingston calls the “sweet spot where unsettling meets endearing”. But Kingston says that Fuggler, with its signature teeth and anarchic expressions, pushes the ugly-cute aesthetic even further.

“The fact that Fugglers don’t have that traditional toy aesthetic really makes you look at it again and again. I think everyone can find a Fuggler that fits their own personality,” Kingston says. “People don’t buy Fugglers. They want to own a Fuggler. They want to carry it and show off their personality through it.”

In Hong Kong, this is playing out most visibly through the brand’s bag clip format — miniature Fugglers that consumers attach to their bags and wear almost like a personal emblem.

The Blind Box Dopamine Hit

Like Labubu, Fuggler also has a blind box format, and Kingston is candid about why it works so effectively. “That dopamine hit when you’re opening the box and not knowing what you’re going to get — that really resonates here in Hong Kong,” he says. “You chase the rarities, you want to complete the whole collection, you can exchange with your friends — and today you can do that through platforms like Vinted or eBay.”

He is quick to clarify that Fuggler does not actively cultivate the secondary resale market — “that just happens to be a coincidence” — but a thriving secondary economy only deepens a brand’s cultural weight, and Kingston knows it. The numbers tell their own story: Rhodes Pet Science revealed in a 2026 study that “Fuggler has become a global phenomenon in the human toy category with almost 1 billion views on social media and over 25 million units sold last year.” People are not just buying a Fuggler; they are building communities and entire online identities around them.

What It Says About Us

Perhaps the most interesting question surrounding Fuggler’s rise — and the broader “kidult” phenomenon — is not really about the toys at all. It is about what our appetite for them reveals. “I think it is escapism. It’s an innocent way of expressing yourself and having a bit of fun,” Kingston says. “There’s a lot of external stress, a lot of pressure in modern society. Fuggler comes along, we don’t take ourselves too seriously, we recognise that not everything is perfect — we live in an imperfect world.”

We’ll never tire of the ‘high maintenance to be low maintenance’ beauty trend. Check out our lazy-girl shortcuts that actually work — tried and tested by us, and suited to Hong Kong lives, humidity and budgets.

Instagram is full of ‘high-maintenance hacks to stay low maintenance,’ but what’s a girl in Hong Kong to do when they require an Amazon Prime subscription, a Target run or materials you just can’t find here? Even if we could participate, Hongkongers have unique concerns to consider: humidity, sweaty commutes, tiny flats and, of course, even smaller budgets. But don’t fret, we’ve rounded up the best tips and tricks to look and feel like a million bucks, without the million-dollar price tag.

Hong Kong Sevens brand ambassador Christy Cheng shares how women forged a path in HK7s and how the next generation is carrying the flame.

Rugby has never been a game for the faint-hearted, so it makes perfect sense that women fell in love with it. In Hong Kong, that story stretches back to the mid-1990s, when a pioneering group of women at Hong Kong Football Club first pulled on their boots to play rugby. That founding generation made an immediate impression, earning the Best and Fairest Player award on the international stage in the United States, and announcing to the world that Hong Kong women could not just compete, but inspire. Trailblazers like Ruth Mitchell, Gabriel Lee and Hoty Chan carried that torch through the 1990s and 2000s, building a culture of grit, excellence and sisterhood.

Fast forward to 2026, and the picture is still dazzling. So, ahead of the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens this weekend — Friday, 17 to Sunday, 19 April at Kai Tak Stadium — we sat down with Christy Cheng, a former Hong Kong captain, World Cup and Asian Games representative, and now brand ambassador for the HK Sevens. In this interview, we talked legacy, leadership and more, paying tribute to the women who have shaped the game.

HK7s, Hong Kong Sevens, Rugby Sevens, Christy Cheng, women's rugby

As the brand ambassador for HK7s and one of the faces of women’s rugby in the city, how do you to use this platform to inspire the next generation?

I stand on the shoulders of giants. I was incredibly fortunate to have trailblazers like Ruth Mitchell, Gabriel Lee and Hoty Chan paving the way, showing me exactly what women in Hong Kong rugby could achieve. Now, I feel a deep responsibility to pay that forward.

My goal is to show young girls that there are no “off-limit” spaces for them. I want to give them a window into what the life of a professional athlete actually looks like — the discipline, the grit and the rewards.

Perhaps most importantly, I want to lead by example. Entering my 40s and still competing at the Premiership level is my way of proving that age and expectations are just numbers. Whether it’s on the pitch or in life, I want every young girl to know that if they commit themselves — both physically and mentally — they can shatter any ceiling. If I can still do it, so can they!

The Hong Kong Sevens is one of the greatest rugby spectacles on earth. What is the atmosphere like playing in front of that crowd?

To be honest, it’s very intense! [laughs] There is a real weight of expectation because you never want to disappoint a home crowd that’s so passionate, so the pressure is definitely there. But I believe that feeling that kind of pressure is a massive privilege — it means what you’re doing truly matters.

The energy in the stadium is like nothing else. My hope for our girls this year is that they really embrace the moment. I want them to soak in every bit of that atmosphere at Kai Tak, turn that crowd energy into their own fuel and remember that they’ve earned their place on that world-class stage.

Read More: Things To Do In Hong Kong This Month

You captained the women’s Sevens side from 2015 to 2017, a time when you also balanced your 15s career. What did leading Hong Kong mean to you?

Representing Hong Kong meant the world to me, leading the side was another step up in responsibility. I was very fortunate to have mentors who didn’t just coach me on the pitch, but guided me into becoming the leader the team needed.

HK7s, Hong Kong Sevens, Rugby Sevens, Christy Cheng, women's rugby

And how did you manage competing in both formats of the game?

In terms of managing both formats, I always believed in being a student of the game. In Hong Kong, there is a tight-knit player pool, and so many of us are required to transition between 7s and 15s. They are very different disciplines and the tactical trends in attack and defence evolve so rapidly. Physical training is a non-negotiable foundation — I found that consistent study, analysing matches and breaking down film was what truly allowed me to keep pace and compete at the highest level in both versions of the sport.

You have represented Hong Kong in the World Cup, Asian Games and the HK7s. What does pulling on that Hong Kong jersey mean to you, and which moment stands out as the proudest of your career?

Pulling on the Hong Kong jersey has always meant the world to me. It represented more than just selection, it was the ultimate validation of my belief and the effort I had poured into the sport since I first discovered rugby at the age of 21.

The proudest moment of my career was undoubtedly the 2019 Hong Kong Sevens. It was my final Sevens appearance before stepping away to start a family. I knew instinctively that I had reached the sunset of my professional career. Being able to compete at the Hong Kong Stadium with my parents and husband there and surrounded by teammates I’d stood shoulder to shoulder with for years was incredibly moving. To reflect on all those years of representation and close such a defining chapter of my life on that iconic pitch is a memory I carry with immense pride.

Runway Summer 2026

A Platform For The City’s Creatives

For Runway Summer 2026, the team is looking for collections that speak to the season — resort wear, swimwear, linen, athleisure, pieces with cultural inflections and anything that captures the particular heat and energy of summer in Southeast Asia. Fashion students, designers, boutique owners, stylists, thrift curators and circular fashion organisations are all encouraged to apply. Beyond showcasing their creations on the runway, participating designers can gain documented content (such as professional photos and videos) throughout the process, something increasingly valuable for small brands navigating their own marketing.
