Looking for things to do in Guangzhou? Discover our favourite where to eat, drink, stay and shop in the Guangdong capital with our ultimate Guangzhou city guide…

Shenzhen may have been Hong Kongers’ favourite weekend getaway of 2025, but we’re branching out in the new year — at least a little further down the High Speed Rail line! Our editor spent a weekend in Guangzhou to check out LIÁNG, Mandarin Oriental’s new bar opening (more on that below!), and we can officially say the city is worth the two-hour transit. It may not have Shenzhen’s 24-hour viral spas, but Guangzhou has its own kind of charm — think streets lined with historical architecture, creative neighbourhood bars and some of the best Cantonese cuisine in Guangdong, courtesy of both street food vendors and Mandarin Oriental’s Michelin-starred restaurants. Read on for our ultimate Guangzhou guide!

How To Get To Guangzhou From Hong Kong

High Speed Rail To Guangzhou From West Kowloon Station

The High-Speed Rail is the most efficient route, featuring ‘Co-location’ customs so you clear both borders at West Kowloon before boarding. The 142km journey takes 45 to 90 minutes depending on your destination:Guangzhou South is the fastest, while Guangzhou East brings you directly into the Tianhe city centre. Trains run frequently from 7am to 10pm.

Ticketing counters are available at the West Kowloon Station, or you can pre-purchase them via the MTR High Speed Rail website or 12306 app (allows for seat selection).

Affordable Cross-Border Coaches With Local Pick-Ups

For a direct route to specific districts at a lower cost, cross-border coaches are a reliable alternative. Buses depart from hubs across Hong Kong, including Wan ChaiMong Kok, Tsim Sha Tsu and Kwun Tong. The journey typically takes three to four hours. Note that you must disembark with your luggage at the Shenzhen Bay or Huanggang Port to clear immigration before reboarding. Most coaches offer drop-off points at major hotels, the Provincial Bus Station or Tianhe District.

Tickets can be purchased at the departure points or online.

Driving For Maximum Comfort & Flexible Border Crossing

Driving offers the most flexibility but takes around three to four hours. Under the Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles scheme, you can drive via the HZMB, but ensure you have the required Mainland driving licence and cross-border permits — a HK licence is not sufficient. Follow the G4 Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway (tolls apply). Just make sure download a reliable non-Google GPS, like AMAP or Baidu Maps.

The tree-lined boulevards showcase over 150 buildings in styles ranging from Neoclassical to Gothic, housing former consulates and banks that are now museums, cafes and shops.

End your first day at Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street, a neon-lit stretch of historic architecture and culinary heaven. While we have plenty of Cheung Fun at home, the version here is often stone-milled and served with a distinct, sweeter soy sauce unique to Liwan. Be sure to hunt down Double-Skin Milk (Shuangpi Nai) at a ‘Time-Honoured’ shop like Nanxin — the buffalo milk used here is exceptionally rich, creating a thick, velvety skin that is hard to find across the border.

DMC magic show in Macau

Meet The World’s Finest Magician and Mentalist

If you’ve seen Netflix’s Death by Magic or National Geographic’s Beyond Magic with DMC, you already know he is no ordinary performer. Regarded as the world’s finest magician and mentalist, he has performed in over 50 countries and captivated millions with his blend of close-up magic and masterful mentalism. Death by Magic saw him fearlessly recreating history’s most breathtaking illusions, while Beyond Magic followed him around the globe learning ancient magical traditions — both earning him critical acclaim for pushing the boundaries of modern magic.

Please tell us your thoughts on performing at Macau for the first time.
Performing in Macau for the first time feels genuinely special. From everything I’ve heard, it’s a city with an extraordinary energy — where history, culture, and modern spectacle coexist [uniquely].

What can audiences expect from your Macau show?
They can expect something far more intimate and interactive than anything they may have seen on stage or television. This is not a typical show with [flashy] boxes — it’s designed for the people in the room. The magic happens up close, sometimes in the audience’s own hands, and the atmosphere is deliberately personal and intimate.

Guide To Osaka And Kyoto 2026 Holiday From Hong Kong How To Get To Japan Osaka And Kyoto

When To Visit Japan & How To Get There

Getting to Japan is extremely easy from Hong Kong, with airlines such as Cathay, Hong Kong Express, JAL, Dragonair and ANA offering direct flights of approximately 4 hours. We recommend flying to Osaka or Tokyo directly, and booking a shinkansen direct if you’re heading to Kyoto (from Tokyo, it will take approximately 2.5 hours and from Osaka, it will take approximately 15 minutes!).

Although each of Japan’s seasons is beautiful in its own way, the best time to visit is between March and May for the beautiful cherry blossom season, and September to November in the fall to see vibrant autumn foliage when the climate is mild and there’s little rainfall. It’s worth noting that it can get extremely crowded during cherry blossom season and to beware of Golden Week crowds (a week-long Japanese holiday comprised of Showa Day, Constitution Memorial Day, Greenery Day and Children’s Day).

Key Japanese public holidays and celebrations to keep in mind:

  • January 1 – New Year’s Day (Ganjitsu)
  • The second Monday in January – Adult’s Day (Seijin-no hi)
  • February 11 – National Founding Day (Kenkoku Kinen-no hi)
  • March 20 or 21 – Vernal Equinox (Shunbun-no hi)
  • April 29 – Showa Day (Showa-no hi)
  • May 3 – Constitution Memorial Day (Kenpou Kinenbi)
  • May 4 – Greenery Day (Midori-no hi)
  • May 5 – Children’s Day (Kodomo-no hi)
  • The third Monday in July – Marine Day or Ocean Day (Umi-no hi)
  • August 11 – Mountain Day (Yama-no hi)
  • The third Monday in September – Respect for the Aged Day (Keirou-no hi)
  • September 23 or 24 – Autumnal Equinox (Shuubun-no hi)
  • The second Monday in October – Health/Sports Day (Taiiku-no hi)
  • November 3 – Culture Day (Bunka-no hi)
  • November 23 – Labour Thanksgiving Day (Kinrou Kansha-no hi)
  • December 23 – Emperor’s Birthday (Tennou Tanjoubi)

Guide To Osaka And Kyoto 2026 Holiday From Hong Kong How To get Around Rail Card Suica Rail Pass

Getting Around In Japan

The most convenient options are the Suica or Japan Rail Green Pass, which gives you access to the first-class carriage on almost any Japan Rail (JR) train, boat or bus (excluding the fastest bullet train or shinkansen) for 7, 14 or 21 days. You can use the card similarly to a Hong Kong Octopus card and use it to make purchases in stations or at 7-11. Many cards can be purchased online, but note that these cards are often sold out, so we recommend purchasing from a station during off-peak hours!

Although trains are the easiest way to get around in Japan, you can also travel places easily by bus, which offer great sightseeing opportunities (especially when it’s extremely cold or hot!). Cabs are easy to spot and hail, but make sure to have the address in Japanese handy, as they may not speak English. Uber is available in Japan and is considerably more tourist-friendly.

Guide To Osaka And Kyoto 2026 Holiday From Hong Kong Kyoto

Kyoto

Hop on the Shinkansen from Tokyo or Osaka, and three hours later you’ll arrive in the ‘City of Ten Thousand Shrines’.  The ancient imperial capital and open spaces are truly stunning, and the serene historic district makes for perfect strolls at any time of the day! As of recently, this spot is often overrun with tourists, so we recommend trying to come here during off-peak seasons and at off-peak hours to avoid the rush and to truly enjoy the peaceful city.

high speed rail hong kong train to shenzhen, how to get to shenzhen, day guide

High-Speed Rail From West Kowloon

To take the high-speed train from Hong Kong to Shenzhen, begin at West Kowloon Station. Purchase tickets to Futian Station (Shenzhen’s Central Business District) in advance online or at the station, choosing between Second ($75), First ($120), Premium ($134) or Business Class ($224).

At the station, proceed through ticket checks, security and immigration for both Hong Kong and Mainland China in one location — if you don’t have your Mainland Travel Permit, you can also apply for a visa on arrival at the Shenzhen border. Once cleared, board your designated train for the quick, 20-minute ride directly to Futian Station.

Hong Kong Public Transport & Coach Services

Taking a bus or coach is a budget-friendly and flexible way to travel to Shenzhen. Just note that the journey can take up to three hours depending on your starting point, chosen border crossing and traffic. To take a bus to Shenzhen, you have two options:

Book A Cross-Border Express Coach

These depart regularly from major hubs in Hong Kong (Causeway Bay, Wan Chai, Tsim Sha Tsui, Mong Kok) directly to Shenzhen ports or city centres. Operators like Eternal East (永東直巴) and CTS (環島旅運) run these services, with prices ranging from $80 to $150. Once on board, you’ll remain on the same bus, but must get off twice to clear immigration.

Take Public Transport To The Border & Transfer

This is the most affordable method. You can take public buses like B1 from Yuen Long (to Lok Ma Chau Station) to enter the Futian Port or Bus 73K (to Lo Wu Station) for the Luohu Port. Alternatively, the MTR East Rail Line will take you directly to either port. Once you cross the border, use Shenzhen’s metro or taxis.
