Looking for things to do in Guangzhou? Discover our favourite where to eat, drink, stay and shop in the Guangdong capital with our ultimate Guangzhou city guide…

Shenzhen may have been Hong Kongers’ favourite weekend getaway of 2025, but we’re branching out in the new year — at least a little further down the High Speed Rail line! Our editor spent a weekend in Guangzhou to check out LIÁNG, Mandarin Oriental’s new bar opening (more on that below!), and we can officially say the city is worth the two-hour transit. It may not have Shenzhen’s 24-hour viral spas, but Guangzhou has its own kind of charm — think streets lined with historical architecture, creative neighbourhood bars and some of the best Cantonese cuisine in Guangdong, courtesy of both street food vendors and Mandarin Oriental’s Michelin-starred restaurants. Read on for our ultimate Guangzhou guide!

How To Get To Guangzhou From Hong Kong

High Speed Rail To Guangzhou From West Kowloon Station

The High-Speed Rail is the most efficient route, featuring ‘Co-location’ customs so you clear both borders at West Kowloon before boarding. The 142km journey takes 45 to 90 minutes depending on your destination:Guangzhou South is the fastest, while Guangzhou East brings you directly into the Tianhe city centre. Trains run frequently from 7am to 10pm.

Ticketing counters are available at the West Kowloon Station, or you can pre-purchase them via the MTR High Speed Rail website or 12306 app (allows for seat selection).

Affordable Cross-Border Coaches With Local Pick-Ups

For a direct route to specific districts at a lower cost, cross-border coaches are a reliable alternative. Buses depart from hubs across Hong Kong, including Wan ChaiMong Kok, Tsim Sha Tsu and Kwun Tong. The journey typically takes three to four hours. Note that you must disembark with your luggage at the Shenzhen Bay or Huanggang Port to clear immigration before reboarding. Most coaches offer drop-off points at major hotels, the Provincial Bus Station or Tianhe District.

Tickets can be purchased at the departure points or online.

Driving For Maximum Comfort & Flexible Border Crossing

Driving offers the most flexibility but takes around three to four hours. Under the Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles scheme, you can drive via the HZMB, but ensure you have the required Mainland driving licence and cross-border permits — a HK licence is not sufficient. Follow the G4 Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway (tolls apply). Just make sure download a reliable non-Google GPS, like AMAP or Baidu Maps.

LIÁNG bar mandarin oriental guangzhou new bar where to drink

LIÁNG: Elemental Mixology With An Outdoor Terrace

The newest addition to the Mandarin Oriental’s award-winning portfolio, LIÁNG takes its name from the traditional crossbeam that supports Lingnan architecture. The cocktail programme is built around the five elements, utilising modern techniques like clarification and fat-washing to interpret local botanical flavours. We especially loved the Golden Eave cocktail, made with rye, bourbon, roasted goose-fat washed vermouth, sour plum paste and bitters.

DMC magic show in Macau

Meet The World’s Finest Magician and Mentalist

If you’ve seen Netflix’s Death by Magic or National Geographic’s Beyond Magic with DMC, you already know he is no ordinary performer. Regarded as the world’s finest magician and mentalist, he has performed in over 50 countries and captivated millions with his blend of close-up magic and masterful mentalism. Death by Magic saw him fearlessly recreating history’s most breathtaking illusions, while Beyond Magic followed him around the globe learning ancient magical traditions — both earning him critical acclaim for pushing the boundaries of modern magic.

Please tell us your thoughts on performing at Macau for the first time.
Performing in Macau for the first time feels genuinely special. From everything I’ve heard, it’s a city with an extraordinary energy — where history, culture, and modern spectacle coexist [uniquely].

What can audiences expect from your Macau show?
They can expect something far more intimate and interactive than anything they may have seen on stage or television. This is not a typical show with [flashy] boxes — it’s designed for the people in the room. The magic happens up close, sometimes in the audience’s own hands, and the atmosphere is deliberately personal and intimate.

We’re gearing up for every public holiday lined up this year! But with in-flight thefts a frequent occurrence, we’re aiming to land with all the essentials in hand (and we’re not just talking about our skincare routine!). We’re sharing our top in-flight safety tips to keep your belongings secure.

With 2026’s public holidays lining up perfectly for some long weekends and spontaneous getaways, we’re all already mentally packing our carry-ons. But if you’ve been on social media lately, you’ll already know there’s another trend taking off: in-flight thefts! From sneaky bag rummaging in overhead bins to passports going MIA mid-flight, nothing kills a holiday vibe like spending your first night abroad in a foreign country, sans money, passport and emotional stability! So before you jet off, let’s talk flight safety, and we’ll share our top tips for keeping your belongings locked down so your holiday itinerary doesn’t go to waste!

What's On Travel Tips Sassy Hong Kong In-flight safety tips, wear a crossbody bag, crossbody uniqlo

Keep your essentials in a crossbody bag

Gone are the days we thought our parents were insane for asking us to use a crossbody bag under our clothes! While we might not stoop to that extreme, there are plenty of cute and functional crossbody bags that will help keep your essentials close by. Inside, we recommend keeping all important documents (visas, passports, medical cards, etc.) alongside valuable jewellery, medication, airpods and your phone. And for some people, their mini skincare and makeup kits (essentials, of course!).

It goes without saying, too, that you should bring these with you on the whole flight. And yes, that includes the bathroom, and yes, the in-flight bar (for the bougie ones among us!)

What's On Travel Tips Sassy Hong Kong In-flight safety tips, overhead bins for luggage not valuables

Overhead bins are for luggage, not valuables

Avoid putting any valuables in an overhead bin. If someone’s going to rummage, they’re going there first. Since it’s a public storage area, anyone can open a compartment claiming they “mistakenly thought it was mine!” and rifle through (yes, even going so far as to do it while you’re sleeping!), so it’s best to keep your carry-on items of less value here.

If you must use the overhead bin, place your bag upside down

Zippers facing down or inward make it much harder for anyone to access your stuff unnoticed. Even better, we recommend using an additional luggage lock with a combination for extra security.

Sit strategically

We can’t always control where we’ll sit on a plane, but if you can, avoid aisle seats as they’re prime targets for sneaky grab-and-go moments that can happen in an instant. Window or middle seats are ideal, as you know who to expect sitting beside you! And if someone asks to switch seats with you, you don’t have to say yes if you don’t want to. (Resist that people-pleasing tendency!)

Tracking devices are your best friend

An AirTag a day keeps your insanity at bay! If your bag wanders off mid-flight, you’ll know before the plane even touches the tarmac. But don’t just slip it into a rucksack, as often thieves won’t take the whole thing. It’s always best to slip it into the wallet or a smaller pouch holding your valuables.

Sassy Tip: If you’ve got a friend who likes to wander off, ask them to put an AirTag in their pocket for ease of finding them on holiday!

What's On Travel Tips Sassy Hong Kong In-flight safety tips, be wary of people nearby or acting suspicious when the lights are dimmed

Be wary of people nearby

We’re not asking you to watch your neighbours like a hawk, but if you notice something odd, such as someone opening overhead bins when the cabin light is dim, it’s worth holding your valuables a little tighter. Speak up to a flight attendant if you have any concerns and trust your own instincts. (They’re there for a reason!)

Be cautious before your flight

Most thieves choose their target even before boarding, so be wary of hard-launching your brand-new GoPro or latest duty-free pickup while waiting at the gate. If you need to discuss sensitive issues such as budgets or hotel details, be mindful not to discuss this loudly (if at all!) and, of course, never read documents out loud!

Guide To Osaka And Kyoto 2026 Holiday From Hong Kong How To Get To Japan Osaka And Kyoto

When To Visit Japan & How To Get There

Getting to Japan is extremely easy from Hong Kong, with airlines such as Cathay, Hong Kong Express, JAL, Dragonair and ANA offering direct flights of approximately 4 hours. We recommend flying to Osaka or Tokyo directly, and booking a shinkansen direct if you’re heading to Kyoto (from Tokyo, it will take approximately 2.5 hours and from Osaka, it will take approximately 15 minutes!).

Although each of Japan’s seasons is beautiful in its own way, the best time to visit is between March and May for the beautiful cherry blossom season, and September to November in the fall to see vibrant autumn foliage when the climate is mild and there’s little rainfall. It’s worth noting that it can get extremely crowded during cherry blossom season and to beware of Golden Week crowds (a week-long Japanese holiday comprised of Showa Day, Constitution Memorial Day, Greenery Day and Children’s Day).

Key Japanese public holidays and celebrations to keep in mind:

  • January 1 – New Year’s Day (Ganjitsu)
  • The second Monday in January – Adult’s Day (Seijin-no hi)
  • February 11 – National Founding Day (Kenkoku Kinen-no hi)
  • March 20 or 21 – Vernal Equinox (Shunbun-no hi)
  • April 29 – Showa Day (Showa-no hi)
  • May 3 – Constitution Memorial Day (Kenpou Kinenbi)
  • May 4 – Greenery Day (Midori-no hi)
  • May 5 – Children’s Day (Kodomo-no hi)
  • The third Monday in July – Marine Day or Ocean Day (Umi-no hi)
  • August 11 – Mountain Day (Yama-no hi)
  • The third Monday in September – Respect for the Aged Day (Keirou-no hi)
  • September 23 or 24 – Autumnal Equinox (Shuubun-no hi)
  • The second Monday in October – Health/Sports Day (Taiiku-no hi)
  • November 3 – Culture Day (Bunka-no hi)
  • November 23 – Labour Thanksgiving Day (Kinrou Kansha-no hi)
  • December 23 – Emperor’s Birthday (Tennou Tanjoubi)

Guide To Osaka And Kyoto 2026 Holiday From Hong Kong How To get Around Rail Card Suica Rail Pass

Getting Around In Japan

The most convenient options are the Suica or Japan Rail Green Pass, which gives you access to the first-class carriage on almost any Japan Rail (JR) train, boat or bus (excluding the fastest bullet train or shinkansen) for 7, 14 or 21 days. You can use the card similarly to a Hong Kong Octopus card and use it to make purchases in stations or at 7-11. Many cards can be purchased online, but note that these cards are often sold out, so we recommend purchasing from a station during off-peak hours!

Although trains are the easiest way to get around in Japan, you can also travel places easily by bus, which offer great sightseeing opportunities (especially when it’s extremely cold or hot!). Cabs are easy to spot and hail, but make sure to have the address in Japanese handy, as they may not speak English. Uber is available in Japan and is considerably more tourist-friendly.

Hop on the Shinkansen from Tokyo or Osaka, and three hours later you’ll arrive in the ‘City of Ten Thousand Shrines’.  The ancient imperial capital and open spaces are truly stunning, and the serene historic district makes for perfect strolls at any time of the day! As of recently, this spot is often overrun with tourists, so we recommend trying to come here during off-peak seasons and at off-peak hours to avoid the rush and to truly enjoy the peaceful city.

Day Trips From Osaka: Hiroshima, Miyajima & Nara

Guide To Osaka And Kyoto 2026 Day Trips From Osaka Hiroshima Memorial Park

Hiroshima

Hop on the Shinkansen from Kyoto or Osaka (around 1.5 to 2 hours) and head straight for the Peace Memorial Park and Museum, where history hits in a powerful, grounding way. After a quiet morning exploring the memorial grounds, stroll past the Atomic Dome and explore the riverside paths before grabbing lunch nearby. We recommend pairing this spot with a quick ferry over to Miyajima.

Guide To Osaka And Kyoto 2026 Day Trips From Osaka Miyajima Torii Gate

Miyajima

Most famous for its “floating” torii gate, Miyajima is a peaceful spot in Japan offering the most iconic mountain and ocean views. You can arrive at Miyajima by taking the Shinkansen to Hiroshima, then transferring to a 10-minute ferry ride across the bay. Once on the island, check out Itsukushima Shrine, walk out to the torii at low tide, snack your way through the cute streets, or take the ropeway up Mt. Misen for some seriously stellar views. Plus, the free-roaming deer are a total bonus, away from the bustle of Nara!

Guide To Osaka And Kyoto 2026 Day Trips From Osaka Nara Deer

Nara

Nara is the easiest (and cutest) day trip you’ll take in Japan! Just under an hour from Kyoto or Osaka via JR or Kintetsu lines, you’ll arrive at a committee of semi-polite deer who will absolutely try to negotiate snacks with deep bows and cute faces (just remember to bow back at them!) Explore the sprawling Nara Park, step inside the massive wooden hall of Tōdai-ji to see the Great Buddha and wander through tranquil gardens and shrines for a calm and wholesome day trip.

Labour Day And Buddha’s Birthday Hong Kong Public Holiday 2026

Since Buddha’s Birthday is on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month, it changes on our Gregorian calendar year-to-year. In 2026, it falls at the end of May (on a Sunday so we get the following day off for Buddha’s Birthday), bookending the month with Labour Day, meaning we unfortunately can’t combine the holidays. However, May is a great month of the year to travel and these holidays fall on a Friday and Monday, so you can enjoy a long weekend without taking any days off! You’ll beat the crowds of July and August (not to mention the inflated prices and blazing heat) and tour providers are excited for the upcoming season (read: not exhausted!).

Great holiday destinations for a Labour Day or Buddha’s Birthday trip

  • In Penang, Malaysia you can lie on a golden sand beach in the morning, wander historic streets and take in fabulous murals in the afternoon and finish your day feasting on street snacks!
  • If you’ve ever wondered about visiting outback Australia, May is the time to do it, the days are warm but not scorching, making it perfect to hike the desert dunes.
  • Take in the dramatic cliffs and sparkling sea on a romantic coastal getaway to the Almafi Coast in Italy, before the summer crowds spoil your perfect Insta shots.
  • For a quick, three-day trip, consider a spa getaway at one of our top picks in Shenzhen!

2026 Public holiday: Friday, 1 May, 2026 (Labour Day); Monday, 25 May, 2026 (Buddha’s Birthday)
